Ever Wonder If You Might Be Experiencing Incontinence?

Maybe you sometimes leak a little when you sneeze. Or maybe you urinate more frequently than you used to. But is this incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is nothing to be embarrassed about. It affects 10-25% of women under age 65 and 15-30% of women older than 65 who do not live in nursing homes. Women may experience incontinence for the first time after they have given birth.

Incontinence does not always mean that a woman leaks often. For some, it may mean leaking very small amounts only once a week, for others it may mean losing large amounts more frequently. But for all women who experience incontinence, it is inconvenient and often embarrassing.

Many women do not tell their doctor about their symptoms of urinary incontinence. Less than one half of women seek medical care. Fortunately, proper diagnosis and treatment often corrects the problem and eases symptoms. Treatment can be as simple as regular exercising of the muscles of the pelvic floor.

Among the leading-edge treatment options for female incontinence offered at Dr. Kirby's office are special pelvic floor exercises combined with biofeedback techniques, so patients know they are isolating the right muscles. Ms. Greet Luyckx, Clinical Specialist, teaches Dr. Kirby's patients one-on-one, how to practice exercises that can drastically improve and even eliminate their incontinence. "These exercises benefit a wide range of patients, from those who may be experiencing the first symptoms of incontinence to those who have had surgery for incontinence and are having problems again. Many times, after just the first visit, patients experience improvement up to 50%," says Ms. Luyckx.

If you wonder whether or not you are experiencing incontinence, simply fill out this questionnaire and add up your score. Your score will indicate the probability of your needing care and treatment from a physician.
